History
◎ In 1990, the Department of Mechanical Engineering established the Automotive Division, admitting one daytime two-year junior college class. The first division head was Prof. Hsu Kun-Pao.
◎ In 1991, the Automotive Division of the Department of Mechanical Engineering added a nighttime program, participating in the joint entrance examination for the two-year evening program, admitting one class with a three-year study period.
◎ In 1993, the division was renamed the Department of Vehicle Engineering, adding one more daytime two-year junior college class. The department received a first-class rating in the Ministry of Education’s industrial program evaluation. The second department head was Dr. Chu Tsun-Chuan.
◎ In 1994, the Ministry of Education approved the addition of another daytime two-year junior college class, totaling three daytime classes and one nighttime class.
◎ In August 1996, Dr. Chiu Ming-Chih became the third department head.
◎ In July 1997, the school was upgraded from National Yunlin Institute of Technology to National Formosa Institute of Technology.
◎ In 1999, the department was renamed the Department of Vehicle Engineering and began participating in the joint entrance examination for two-year technical programs, admitting one class of 53 students. At the same time, the number of daytime two-year junior college classes was reduced to two. Dr. Chiu Ming-Chih served as the first department chair; in October the same year, after Dr. Chiu became Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ho Ming-Hua assumed the position of department chair.
◎ In 2000, the department began admitting one four-year technical class and one two-year technical class. Admissions to the daytime two-year junior college program were discontinued starting that year. On August 1, 2000, Dr. Hsu Yuan-Yung became the department chair.
◎ In January 2002, the Energy Technology Program Center was established, with Director Hsu Yuan-Yung serving as program convener.
◎ In August 2002, the department began admitting two four-year classes; admissions to the two-year technical program ceased, and the nighttime program switched to admitting four-year students. The department also participated in recruiting graduate students for the Graduate Institute of Power Mechanical Engineering (Group B).
◎ In February 2003, Dr. Chu Tsun-Chuan became the department chair again.
◎ In August 2003, the department admitted one in-service two-year technical class, with classes held Monday to Friday, 18:30–22:25.
◎ In October 2003, the Energy Technology Application R&D Center was established.
◎ In December 2003, the Ministry of Education conducted its evaluation.
◎ In February 2004, the school was renamed National Formosa University.
◎ In 2004, the department admitted another in-service two-year technical class, with classes held Monday to Friday, 18:30–22:25.
◎ In 2010, the master's program in Vehicle Engineering was established.
◎ In August 2005, Dr. Chiu Ching-Huang became the department chair.
◎ In November 2005, the Ministry of Education conducted the evaluation following the university's renaming.
◎ In August 2008, Dr. Lai Ta-Hsi became the department chair.
◎ In February 2010, Dr. Chung Cheng-Ta became the department chair.
◎ In February 2013, Dr. Weng Feng-Tsai became the department chair.
◎ In February 2016, Dr. Chiu Ming-Chih became the department chair.
◎ In December 2017, the Competency Building was completed.
◎ In February 2022, Dr. Tian Zi-Li became the department chair.
◎ In February 2025, Dr. Weng Feng-Tsai became the department chair.
